Prince - The Greatest Romance Ever Sold [Neptunes Extended Remix] (feat. Q-Tip & Pharrell)

Going to peep the artist currently known as Prince later tonight. I’ll admit I’m not a huge Prince fan (more of an MJ guy) and I know the man’s discography about as good as the average person. But I do have great respect for the artist, largely due to the tremendous influence he has had on the careers of musicians that I greatly admire (i.e. ?uestlove, D’Angelo, The Neptunes and many more). Plus, getting to see a living legend do his damn thing live in person is surely an opportunity that one cannot pass up (the tix are compliments of my sister). And tonight’s musical event provides the perfect excuse to post this silky smoove example of turn-of-the-millennium Neptunology. The artist probably won’t perform this particular joint (unless Tip and Skateboard P are somehow miraculously featured as surprise guests) but I’m looking forward to my first live Prince experience regardless (for all of those iconic hits and elaborate extended jams).

Pusha T featuring Tyler, The Creator - Trouble On My Mind [Prod. The Neptunes]

Pharrell, Chad, Pusha and Tyler all delivering the ill-tastic goods on this joint. Summer is no doubt the best time for a brand new Neptunes heat rock. Christmas in July, indeed.

Jay-Z - I Know [Prod. The Neptunes]

My favourite Jigga/Tunes collabo to date (from an underrated album by an overrated hip hop artist). The drums and melody are rather simple but wonderfully effective, you know? I know.

Def Jam RAPSTAR: February Update

Haven’t made one of these posts in a while (and many of you are probably just fine with that). But I’ve been doing rather well at this hip hop emceeing game over the past few weeks and thought I’d share some of my highlights.

Let’s start off with a Kanye track that I’ve managed to hold the top spot for over 3 weeks now. I recently improved my world record with as close to a flawless performance that I could muster (attaining 99% on BOTH lyrics and timing on EXPERT level), besting my previous record by over 10,000 pts. And I now feel somewhat secure that my top spot is nearly untouchable (considering the seizable gap between 1st and 2nd place). Stronger than ever! No rest for the wicked (on the mic), though.

Over a week ago, the aptly named “Backpack pack” showed up on the PlayStation Network as RAPSTAR DLC, which contained IMO the highest quality of joints to be released for the game to date: Mos Def’s Ms. Fat Booty, Talib Kweli’s Get By and Common’s The Light (which I had suggested to the RAPSTAR twitter a while back and am glad they listened to me as well as other fans of the superb track). The Light is my favourite joint in the game so far as well as my personal favourite to perform. It involves Common (in his prime) flowing lovingly and skillfully over one of J Dilla’s finest beats (from the Soulquarian produced LP, 2000’s timeless Like Water For Chocolate). This is the late and legendary Jay Dee’s monumental first appearance in the game (not to mention Lonnie Lynn Jr.’s as well) and the song selection is perfect. Oh yes, that’s me (the magical Juan, Carddeck_P) at the top of the charts, nearly mastering the joint in a little under a week (but there’s always room for improvement, especially as other players continue to fine-tune their top score). Edit: Updated pic. My old score was (temporarily) toppled, which inspired me to return the favour to my competitor and land squarely back on top (besting my previous score by 12,000+). No doubt, I will try my damnedest to proudly hold the world champion spot in this, one of the most beautiful rhyming/singing compositions you will ever hear (and I mean it).

If you’ve played this classic Eric B. & Rakim joint, you’ll know that it isn’t very long (lyrically) as it’s composed of just one Rakim verse (although it’s one revolutionary verse, for sure). And because of that, there’s little room for error if you wish to rank highly…actually, there is ZERO room for error (the player has to be absolutely perfect). So in the process of learning/performing this track to a painstakingly precise level of detail, I achieved what I previously thought was a myth: attaining 100% in one of the evaluation criteria (in this case, the ever-crucial timing). I’ve scored 99% timing a few times in this track as well as others. So nailing technically perfect timing while rhyming the lines of what many rappers consider to be the greatest MC of all-time (simply known as “The God”) was an awesome surprise. And for my troubles, I garnered the top score in the world…by a mere 28 points (precise, indeed). Edit: Updated pic. This time I earned 95% on lyrics and another perfect 100% in timing, while setting a new high score (adding a valuable 355 pts to my previous record) and further distancing myself from the incredibly tight competition. More Rakim joints on RAPSTAR, please!

Been trying to nail down a Neptunes joint (there are 3 of them on RAPSTAR) for a while now. Currently 4th on Busta’s Pass the Courvoisier Part II (don’t know the lyrics off by heart yet) and got as high as 2nd on Grindin’ by the Clipse (which I know well, but others know just a little better). However LL’s silky smooth Luv U Better (featuring far more easier wordplay than the aforementioned 2 joints, not to mention some nice crooning) will do just fine. TUNES, y’all!

Scenario has been considered hip hop’s greatest posse cut (sure, the remix is arguably even better, but the landmark original came first). And to say the least, it’s quite the challenge for one person to do the job of 5 explosive MCs (the Tip/Busta back and forth home stretch is especially jarring for your breath control). For the longest time, I was stuck in 13th-14th place (767,000+ pts) on this mad hyped track. Until recently, when I (clearly) stepped my game up, nailed some timely 8X multiplier exclamation points and jumped all the way to the #1 spot while besting the previous top score by almost 10,000 pts. There *I* go, yo!

Whether you love him or hate him, Kanye West is without a doubt the most recognizable personality in hip hop (and arguably all of music, in terms of current stars) today. And contrary to the majority of popular “artists” out there, dude wasn’t simply fabricated by the generic star-making machine (which we have to blame for many of the marginally talented chart toppers currently) but rather was a legitimately talented and passionate student of many of the greatest hip hop producers of the 1990’s (legends I grew up admiring as well, and many of whom I am certain are still unfamiliar to Yeezy’s massive pop radio audience). In light of all that, Kanye’s 4 RAPSTAR tracks (the most available for play by a single artist) are IMO the biggest fishes to fry. And for what seems like an eternity in the ever-changing RAPSTAR world (where every record can fall at a moments notice), I had managed to hold the top spot on 3 out of the 4 Yeezy tracks (Stronger, Can’t Tell Me Nothing and Gold Digger, all attained in that order). That is until last week, when I finally broke away from #3 on the Jesus Walks chart (the track out of the quartet that was giving me the most trouble) and scored a new world record, thereby attaining what I have deemed the unprecedented “Kanye Slam” (4 for 4, baby!). Took me about 3 months to accomplish (it was a fun challenge, no doubt). In terms of MBDTF, I would love to see Power or All Of The Lights available for DLC (both mad hyped joints that are suitable for the game’s performance-heavy feel IMO) and hopefully continue my Yeezy domination.

I know it seems like I’m bragging (no wait, I AM bragging). But I am damn proud of my standings/scores, which I’ve spent an insane amount of time practicing/achieving/fine-tuning, more so than any other game (passionate hip hop obsession is putting it lightly). And considering that any of my records can be broken at ANY time (peeps worldwide are playing RAPSTAR right now trying to take me out, I’m sure), these lengthy vanity posts are my way of preserving the moment. I’ve also learned that the only way to truly excel at this game (which, to me, isn’t simply a game anymore) is to practice the joints constantly, either through the practice mode (which is best for nailing any tricky timing sequences or pitches you have to hit) or via actual counted performance, until the joint becomes second nature (vocal/muscle memory). Also, make sure that your mic is properly registering every word and vocal nuance (otherwise cop a new one because you’re wasting your breath…literally).

One of my preferred training exercises is to loop an entire track (or particular section I’m having trouble with) on practice mode and rap along (while sometimes walking around the vicinity doing other things) until I feel I can do the joint on EXPERT mode (which blocks out the lyrics). I used to do this a lot as a teen (as we all do with our favourite songs), but more so on a casual level and not the dedicated/serious level I’m on now (hey, when world bragging rights are at stake, only the strongest survive). Memorizing the insane amount of hip hop lyrics (ranging from 300-500 words per minute) is rather difficult if you’re not the one who wrote them (it’s hard enough to learn the words/timing, I can’t imagine having to create the structure). But now I truly understand how all of those amazing emcees know thousands of lyrics (both theirs and others) so well, with Black Thought being the ultimate lyrical beast. Speaking of which, still waiting for ANY tracks by The Roots to show up in the game; I wasn’t lying when I said that my brain is a Black Thought lyrics encyclopedia (and I’m ready to prove that to the RAPSTAR world). All hail (IMO) the G.O.A.T. music game!

TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2010:

1. N*E*R*D - Nothing —-> Check out my preferred tracklist here!

Choice cut #2: Victory

For being victorious in winning the “grand prize” of top spot on my countdown of favourite albums from 2K10, N*E*R*D’s return-to-form opus gets 2 (count ‘em, TWO) consecutive audio posts. Because, as we all know, we only get one valuable Tumblr audio post a day to use wisely, although we should at least get 2 (come on, slippery slope!).

A 5-spot of LPs righ-chea…that I also enjoyed during the last 12 months, but didn’t make my personal stacked Top 10 (listed in order of release date):

  1. Massive Attack - Heligoland
  2. Reflection Eternal - Revolutions Per Minute
  3. John Legend & The Roots - Wake Up!
  4. Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross - The Social Network
  5. Ghostface Killah - Apollo Kids

A tremendous year for music, no doubt. My ears greatly thank all of these talented artists for their quality creative output which in turn gives a memorable soundtrack to our everyday lives. Yay for (good) music!

N*E*R*D - Sacred Temple [Prod. The Neptunes]

As I reach the conclusion of an impromptu Star Trek marathon, consisting of a couple of classic TOS eps on DVD (Space Seed & This Side of Paradise) and my first Blu-ray viewing of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan aka the greatest entry in the entire Star Trek motion picture canon (not to mention a sci-fi adventure that I personally find more stimulating, both intellectually and emotionally, than any episode in the Star Wars saga *friendly shots fired*), I figured I’d post this terrific “Star Trak” produced bonus cut (from the deluxe edition of Nothing) that was IMO good enough to be on the actual album (along with the bonus tracks I Wanna Jam and Ride That Thang, the latter of which was an Amazon.com exclusive, I think), if anything for the sick drum pattern during the bridge-like chorus that grows with each succession (and the composition itself is almost like an erotic take on Buddhism…minus the allusions to alcohol consumption and sexual desire, of course). And that was all one incredibly long sentence.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed N*E*R*D’s latest LP since it leaked a bit over a week ago (it officially hit stores yesterday internationally and today in the US), which was a pleasant surprise since all of the multiple release date delays made me think for some reason that the album was going to be a disappointment. The only real problem I had with Nothing was with the overall sequencing.

Here’s just one example: Party People was indeed a simplistically perfect way to set things off (no argument there), but placing Hot-N-Fun at the very end of the recording was a gross miscalculation, I feel (not the kind of joint that I would choose to fade out to, so to speak). The bassline-heavy club jam is more of an early-to-middle track and, as such, should be used to build excitement in the climbing action stage. In light of this, because sequencing is my absolute favourite part of constructing music mixes (since you get to tell a coherent story as well as create a consistent mood with the order that you select), I took a shot at re-sequencing N*E*R*D’s 4th studio LP (which feels like a superior successor to 2004’s Fly Or Die) in an effort to hopefully enhance the strengths of each song as well as hide their weaknesses, all while bringing out any surprisingly smooth built-in transitions.

I shall be copping the new album this week to once again show some neptunian support for Pharrell, Chad and Shae. So if you’re a fan that’s digging the new LP, then you should too (because let’s face it, N*E*R*D doesn’t really have a huge following when compared to Pharrell’s far less-talented pop star contemporaries). And after copping the recording, if you also think that the track sequence on Nothing is a bit uneven, then feel free to give it another spin in the following order (which concludes with my favourite joint on the LP that just happens to be a perfect and inspiring album closer). I, for one, certainly seem to enjoy the music more in this particular manner:

  1. Party People
  2. Perfect Defect
  3. Ride That Thang
  4. Fuego
  5. Hot-N-Fun
  6. Hypnotize U
  7. Sacred Temple
  8. I’ve Seen The Light / Inside of Clouds
  9. Life As A Fish
  10. The Man
  11. Nothing On You
  12. It’s In The Air
  13. Help Me
  14. Victory
  15. I Wanna Jam
  16. God Bless Us All

Runtime: Just under an hour.

Edit: Copped the deluxe edition (the spine is blue with N*E*R*D in red) today and ripped it according to my particular specifications and it sounds fantastic; flipping through the booklet while listening and The Neptunes’ fingerprints AND official credits are all over this joint (i.e. Hugo’s back in the house…and with a very prominent saxophone).

N*E*R*D - God Bless Us All

The music gods have indeed blessed us all with such a wonderfully stacked Fall music season (one of the best in recent memory). A Neptunes production through and through right here. And I always dig it whenever them VA boys break out that majestic horn from their sound kit. Nothing is something that’s out there right now. So here’s one to grow on, bruh…

Re-Up Gang - Show You How To Hustle

From the excellent 2008 mixtape We Got It For Cheap, Vol. 3: The Spirit Of Competition. Here are the Clipse, Ab-Liva and Sandman rhyming over one of the illest self-produced (i.e. beats that they kept for themselves) Neptunes soundscapes ever. This is of course the beat to Skateboard P Presents Show You How To Hustle from Pharrell’s fan-tas-tic In My Mind LP from 2006 (written, arranged and produced entirely by P). It’s been a minute since I’ve listened to any of the three WGIFC mixtapes, but nonetheless they all remain as ill documents of dope rhymes over dope beats (unauthorized stylee). Star Treezy!

Clipse - Ride Around Shining [Prod. The Neptunes]

Just felt like posting this Clipse joint right now from the duo’s greatest LP (not to mention the darkest and most incredibly raw studio product in Neptunes production history). Perhaps because much of the pop world is suddenly discovering who the f*ck Pusha T is as of this past Sunday evening (let’s not forget Malice now). Or simply because this joint is ill-tastic in numerous ways. Nonetheless, sh!t is straight up in touch with the keys, yo.

Kelis - Milkshake [Neptunes Remix] (feat. Pharrell & Pusha T)

IMO, this near 5-minute chaotic monsterpiece (complete with a quirky soundscape that fittingly evokes visions of thick milkshake mixing) trumps the original infamous 2K3 radio hit (which was also a Neptunian production). Because after all…”this is the re-mix.” Kelis dear, please find some way to get back in the studio with Pharrell and Chad; pretty please, with sugar on top and milk in the shake. Because you literally made beautiful(ly ill) music together. Happy Friday Night.

Pharrell - Fun, Fun, Fun [Prod. Pharrell Williams] (Despicable Me OST)

What a great summer song for the whole family! Almost makes you wanna go back to elementary/secondary school just so you could have that awesome “school’s out for summer” feeling again (almost). Also, Skateboard P’s back and on the attack with his endearing “phalsetto” stylee (it’s been a while). Whatta good time, indeed! Edit: This joint feels like a summer prequel to Happy from N*E*R*D’s Seeing Sounds. Although it’s much more care-free, playful and…well…HAPPY. This one’s definitely fo’ da keedz.

As for the film itself, I’m taking my nephew (now 3.5 years old) to see it tomorrow afternoon. He’s peeped the trailer quite a bit over the past few weeks and is rather excited (especially for that roller coaster scene). So if you’re keeping score, the little man’s first theatrical experience was Astro Boy last October (perfect timing). And now his second cinematic experience (and first in-theatre summer film) will be an enjoyably amusing villain-with-a-heart movie that’s got a score and soundtrack (10 tracks, Illmatic style…haha) both produced by The Neptunes.

Yes indeedy, I’m making sure that this kid is on the proper pop cultural track alright (I take this job seriously, I do).
