This horrifying story reminds me of an episode from the original Alfred Hitchcock Presents series entitled “Breakdown” where the incomparable Joseph Cotten stars as a heartless businessman who is paralyzed from a car accident and is unable to communicate in any way, yet is completely aware of his surroundings the entire time. The riveting narrative is mainly comprised of the character’s frightening inner thoughts juxtaposed with static images of the now powerless individual laying motionless, unable to alert anyone of the fact that he is still alive. However, that tale was fictional and only lasted 25 minutes (without commercials). But on the real, I’ll never complain about no one listening to me ever again.
International theatrical trailer for Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond (1981). Re-released on DVD last fall by the super dope Grindhouse Releasing: “The undisputed leader in quality exploitation” (and how!). I finally acquired this title recently and have thoroughly enjoyed its abundance of gore set pieces. As for the trailer, the glo(u)rious gore warning is still in effect.
Trailer for Joe D’Amato’s infamous Buio Omega. An Italian gore flick from 1979, most widely known under the name Beyond The Darkness. However, I know this film by its North American release title: Buried Alive.
Back in the mid-90s, a friend and I were perusing the local Blockbuster Video, looking to blind-rent Peter Jackson’s awesome gorefest Braindead aka Dead Alive (yes, Mr. Jackson made some landmark films before the LOTR trilogy and they were far more interesting). Although at the time, we weren’t really sure what we were looking for, only that it was a gorey horror film with the word “Alive” somewhere in the title (clearly we had done our research). As luck would have it, we came across a VHS box with the title Buried Alive. “This must be it!” we foolishly thought. On top of that, the box had that very enticing Restricted Viewing sticker that Blockbuster always placed on titles that it deemed too disturbing (this is during a time long before the company would make the idiotic move to not carry unrated versions of films at all). And so we proceeded to rent it.
That was the only time I ever saw Buio Omega but I never forgot how brutally depraved it was and how its cold atmosphere and serious tone were rather uncomfortable to experience (D’Amato is good for that), even as a young and enthusiastic gore-hound wilfully looking to be grossed out. So being the masochistic horror fan that I am, I would love to view it again as an adult (good ol’ reliable Amazon has it in stock). Warning: this trailer contains ample gore and nudity and, as a result, plot spoilers (how sacred!). So it is definitely not work safe (hell, it’s barely home safe).
The horror geek corner:
The Creepiest Surgery Scene In The World - Horror - io9
From the filmmakers:
Our inspiration for this short were movies like The Thing(1982), The Body Snatchers(1977), The Fly(1986), you know, 70’s and 80’s sci-fi/horror.
Yes, I know all too well. Great work.
Free online streaming of EVERY single asian horror film that I’ve ever seen or heard of…and then like 300 more. Whoa. There are many films on this index that I’ve been wanting to check out for a minute now. Looks like I won’t be hibernating my notebook for the next week or so.
I’ve made hundreds of posts on this here tumblelog and according to the Tumblr search function, I’ve only made ONE post about a man who is literally the coolest guy on the planet: Senor Bruce. So today, I’m gonna increase that underwhelming figure by an astounding 100% with an awesome interview conducted by the fine folks at HoH. But really, Ash is simply incapable of having a dull conversation. Even if you are standing in adjacent urinals to the guy, although we all know that you NEVER talk or look at another dude while you’re both pissing, I’ll bet you can still have a great convo with him under those awkward circumstances (as soon as I get the chance, I’ll let y’all know how it went).
Side note: House of Horrors was the very first horror related website I ever visited, way back in 1997 (and it looks exactly like it did way back when). In particular, their legendary (and still yet to be completed) VAULT had a huge hand in molding my horror geek IQ during my formative horror-movie-watching teenage years. And I’m still learning more and more every day (especially from comprehensive factoid tomes like The Book Of Lists: Horror).
Happy Thanksgiving!
Nothing scares me more right now than the prevent-it.ca WSIB ads (playing on Canadian TV). They just get more and more disturbing (which is the point). Deaths in the workplace is indeed an issue that needs to be addressed and prevented, yet the gore-hound in me can’t help but be morbidly fascinated by the effective execution of these TV spots. Here’s the latest one that really caught me off guard while watching the Sens vs. Habs game (in the middle of the afternoon!). But as usual, the hilariously insensitive YouTube comments helps to lighten the morbid mood.

More Halloween goodies. This time it’s the one that started it all. The elusive and lesser known big brother of the greatest horror movie of all time, The Evil Dead. Here is Within The Woods in its entirety, looking better than ever before. Wait no, it still looks horrible, but I think the indoor scenes are a bit brighter. I still want it on an official release though.
Halloween is approaching (in a bit over 2 weeks). And in celebration of the greatest non-gift giving holiday around (take that Victoria Day!), here is my favourite trailer to one of the best horror films of the past 10 years. Alexandre Aja’s masterful Haute Tension aka Switchblade Romance. Even though this song isn’t actually in the film, Sonic Youth’s creepy remake of The Carpenter’s Superstar (Long Ago and Oh So Far Away) fits the trailer and film perfectly (especially if you’ve seen the entire film). Edit: Link to the vid, since the user who uploaded it inexplicably disabled embedding. Unless you’re the person who actually cut and edited the trailer, will you just please re-enable embedding. Would appreciate it.
