Community s02e19 “Critical Film Studies”

“Of course, Spock probably goes without saying…” There is no other single character on television that I identify more with than Abed Nadir from Community. I don’t exactly look or talk like him (nor do I blink fast), but the way that character thinks and operates really hits home with me (although I still aspire to attain Abed’s Buddhist-like temperament). The Community ep from last season perfectly titled “Critical Film Studies” (still my personal favourite chapter in the amazing series) is indescribable in its beauty and genius (both on a cerebral and emotional level) and is precisely what sealed the deal/convinced me that Abed is truly one of the greatest characters in television history (it also made me realize why exactly I watch/write about so much yet somehow still not enough TV in the first place).
But moving onto the main reason for reblogging this 8 month-old post: congratulations to Danny Pudi and the Community writers for Abed rightfully being named the best character on TV for 2011 by Paste Magazine. If you’ve got 22-30 minutes to spare, tune into NBC at 8PM this Thursday (and then sometime in the spring) to help save the best show on network television (a well-informed opinion that is certainly not unique to me). FYI, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire gets my personal nod for best series in all of entertainment currently; only one ep remaining in what has been an unbelievably rich(harrow) second season for what I feel is the first true successor to The Sopranos. I honesty don’t know where I’d be without quality programming (food for the brain and warmth for the heart).

I’m not ashamed (quite pleased, on the contrary) to admit that I see quite a bit of myself in Danny Pudi’s hilariously geeky (and expertly performed) characters. In particular, I understand/appreciate many of Abed’s obscure references on Community (N*E*R*D alert!). And being a magic enthusiast myself (D*O*R*K alert!), I can totally relate with Ben’s desire to perform an illusion for an unsuspecting (and sometimes uninterested) spectator. Although I tend to ask politely/segue smoothly into my routines (at least I think so). Similarly, my bed is also “where the magic happens”. Heh-heh *raising eyebrows* And that’s because the large surface area and thick pillow-top are ideal for sitting down with a magic book open whilst practicing card sleights/manipulations and not having to worry about dropping props all over the floor. But that’s obvious ;)

“MAAAA-GIIIIIC!”

Community - Season 1, Episode 25: Pascal's Triangle Revisited

Last call. *turns off the study hall lights*
*sighs* Study over. *turns off the lights*
*enters the room holding a now half-eaten gigantic 60-inch diameter cookie* What are you doing?
Just giving things a finale vibe.
Well, how's this for a finale vibe? Pierce asked me to move in with him. In his MANSION.
More of a spin-off vibe. But you should do it.
I thought we were friends!
We are. Best friends. That's why we shouldn't be roommates. We'll end up fighting. And putting a masking tape line down the middle of our room.
We just won't get masking tape!
Troy, you should live with someone who you like. But whose friendship wouldn't be altered because of constant irritation. That's Pierce. If you and I move in, we jump the shark. That'll end it.
Well, maybe YOU'RE ending it. *begins to walk away then comes back* Oh, and for the record. There was an episode of Happy Days where a guy LITERALLY jumped over a shark. And it was the BEST one! *walks away while taking another bite of the gigantic cookie*
*shaking his head amidst the darkness of the room*
