"I also believed that comics were capable of more than just making people laugh. So in my themes I incorporated tears, grief, anger, and hate, and I created stories where the ending was not always happy." - Osamu Tezuka

True story.

And I can confirm this. On my SGS2X, auto-correction is indeed currently turned off (however I keep word suggestion on). Also, using Swype instead of tapping the keys is pure magic. And 97* times out of 100, the word I intended on swyping is accurately formulated.

Now here’s an enjoyable video review of the Samsung Galaxy S II X aka the Hercules (That’s me! That’s me!) aka the super-duper smartphone that I upgraded to on December 21st when my 2 year contract with my now archaic HTC Hero expired (it’s been fun, little guy). Said review covers all aspects of everything that I love about this dream smartphone which is near perfect, because IMO there has yet to be a perfect smartphone (or any gadget for that matter). Having said that (and after spending a bit over a week with the Hercules), I can confirm that it is a straight up beast in all departments (i.e. processing power, sleek physical design, magnificent visuals, 4G connectivity speeds, etc.), has a back-facing camera that can legit replace my SONY point & shoot (which is no slouch, mind you) and it features the finest touchscreen display (a whopping 4.5” super AMOLED) that I have ever handled to date. But don’t take this proud “Cool Herc” owner’s word for it, check out Wireless Insider’s excellent video review of IMO the best all-around smartphone of 2K11 as well as a decently future proofed handset (NFC capabilities; Android 4.0 in Q1 of 2K12).

Bonus: Furious Technology conducts a fair and factual comparison between the SGS2X and the industry leading (in terms of sales) iPhone 4S. Peep it here to draw your own conclusions as to which one is the superior mobile device.

Large assortment of sushi at the T&T in Ottawa (there’s more choices to the right and around the corner). Superb selection for a supermarket. Picked up some dynamite rolls and spider crab rolls just now while enjoying the first real day of spring weather (finally!).
Note: This post has been brought to you by Tumblr Android app (which I keep forgetting to use when posting stuff on the fly). Happy Friday!

Miso - What are you watching?

Like many of you, I consume a crap load of media. And over the past few years, I’ve used Last.fm to catalogue/broadcast my music tastes as well as TheAuteurs/MUBI to keep track of/express my film tastes (both links can also be accessed via the header of my site). But I’ve never encountered anything I could use to formally document my just-as-extensive television preferences (or perhaps I just haven’t been looking hard enough).

Enter the terrifically named Miso media tracking service for TV and film. In short, it’s almost like a manual scrobbler that you can use to broadcast the details of whatever it is you’re watching…right now! The service is still relatively new (been around since March 2K10) and is run by Bazaar Labs, a San Francisco based start-up company. But I’m glad I joined when I did since the site just recently underwent some positive design/feature changes as detailed in this post from a few weeks back on the Miso blog. However, I still would like some summary charts and maybe a ratings system (in due time, I guess).

Other than the simplified checking in process (which becomes a fun habit that earns you points and can ultimately unlock cool badges), it’s also interesting to explore what everyone else is watching out there in TV land. Really puts things into perspective regarding the sheer amount of media that’s being consumed at any given moment (as well as how widespread the power of DVRs, online streaming and torrents truly is). Also, if the TV show or film that you are currently peeping is not in the database, the process to add ANY title is quick and painless (I’ve added a few things myself).

So if you peep a lot of TV (like me) and want to get a good idea of just how much you watch on the idiot genius box, all while potentially connecting with like-minded, cultured individuals like yourself. Then simply check-in your shows (and flicks/viddys) to Miso as you are watching them and let the program-based social community work its magic (not sure what exactly that is just yet, but I like the overall idea). I’ve been using this excellent service for a bit over a week now and this post is where I give it my official seal of approval! *stamp*

Behold! My Miso Profile (although you will have to sign up to see anything past my last 15 check-in entries).

For whom this may apply to: If you’re interested enough to join this modern day couch potato community, then be sure to DL the recently released Miso application for your Android mobile device (QR code below). Works like a charm and makes checking-in whatever you’re viewing right this very moment that much easier, wherever you may be peeping a show (i.e. at home, the movie theatre, a friend’s place, your fave watering hole, looking through a store window, etc.). Now then…eat, drink and watch something!

Introducing: Tumblr Android App

Built by the same brilliant team behind the Tumblr iPhone App, v1 of the official Tumblr Android App is ready to download!

Click here from your Android phone to install
(or click here to download directly)

Been enjoying this solid Android app for over a week now (I’m currently utilizing the wi-fi at a Whole Foods in the Boston suburbs) and it’s nice to finally use an official Tumblr app that doesn’t automatically shut down and need to be restarted everytime it’s minimized when all I wanted to do was check my mail or change the album I was listening to (iPhone/iPod touch Tumblr app, I’m looking squarely at you!). But seriously, it’s dope that Android has finally (and officially) joined the Tumblr party (and fashionably late, if you will).

FINALLY…the Tumblr app…has arrived…for Android!

Considering the ample time that has passed while sitting back (not in the cut) watching as iPhone and BlackBerry users got to enjoy Tumblr on the go, I thought that this would never happen (or at least I figured it would show up sometime in the fall/winter). Looks like they saved the best for last ;) But what a pleasant surprise indeed. And great timing as I will be leaving for my aforementioned trip to Boston on Friday. Thank goodness (and no thanks to Telus) I took the plunge and hacked my Hero a couple of weeks ago so that it could run a Euro ROM of Android 2.1 (which is the minimum OS requirement for Tumblr’s latest official mobile application). And yes, I’m posting this from my celly so it indeed works nice & smooth. Good evening!

Google Shopper for Android
Been playing around with this newly released Android application for the past few minutes. And man, does it ever work (like magic, you would say). Well, it works on almost everything. I tested it out by scanning the image/likeness of the following items (books, DVDs/CDs and video games are highly suggested):
Ultramagnetic MC’s - Critical Beatdown
Metallic Blue SONY Dualshock 3 controller
Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (on Blu-ray)
It found all of those items with very quick ease (“Whoooaaaaa!” - Me). Then for kicks, I strayed off the beaten path and scanned:
The back of a red Bicycle playing card. The results didn’t come up with a pack of cards but rather a music album where the person on the cover was holding a poker hand. That was cool but unexpected.
The box containing my empty bottle of Johnnie Walker Gold Label blended whisky. Didn’t find it, not even after a barcode scan (maybe Android was just sad that it was empty).
A box of Apple Jacks (the logo and image on the front). And it came up with Froot Loops (hey, same shape of cereal). Oh so close.
A box of Sunmaid raisins. And it came up with The Sunmaid raisins playbook and cookbook (that was more info than I was expecting).
Shopper displays reviews as well as pricing info in US dollars only, but I’m sure there will be an option in the future for choice of currency. Either way, this is a pretty darn cool application that works great on my Hero; I’ll be sure to give it a good workout next time I head out to the mall.
But hey, don’t take my word for it; try it out for yourself! Get it on your Android phone by searching for “Shopper” in the Android Market. Or simply use Barcode Scanner to scan the QR code above and let Android do the rest (that is if you have the scanner installed. If not, just scan the QR code over here…just kidding…search for “Barcode Scanner” in the Market).

And for my 2001st post…
So because I blinked, I completely missed out on the super flash, instant online sell out of Android collectibles that began (and ended) almost a week ago. However the 3” figurines will be available in select stores in (hopefully) a few weeks not to mention another shipment will be on its way to the Dyzplastic online store in a few months. But if the first sale is any indication, then multiple browser refreshes will be necessary simply to know the crucial moment when to strike (“selling like hotcakes” is an understatement).
In any event, congratulations to the select few out there that were actually able to land one of these cute, little guys. And although there is no way to pre-select a particular type of Android (due to the blind box assortment), the most sought after figurine from the collection in my eyes would easily be the rare chase edition (i.e. a surprise figure with an unknown blind box ratio) pictured above: the APK 2008. A brilliant homage to the G.O.A.T. computer/robot/android film character: the HAL 9000 from Stanley Kubrick’s science-fiction monster of a masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
From the all-seeing and iconic glowing red eye to the depiction of the slide-out memory bank/database on its back, this figurine is a perfect marriage of the granddaddy of all sci-fi films and a revolutionary mobile OS on the cusp of sky-rocketing beyond the infinite. I bet if Stanley were still alive, he’d want one of these sitting on his office desktop at the SK estate (and I imagine that a perfectionist detail-freak like Kubrick would appreciate the intricate geekiness and open customization of an Android smartphone).

a-simple-lastfm-scrobbler - Project Hosting on Google Code

Currently playing the 2004 soulful electronic hip-hop album (and an honourable mention on my nearly completed list of the best albums of the 2000s) Connected by The Foreign Exchange on my HTC Hero as I’m pumping the tunes from said smartphone into a pair of Plantronics 590 stereo bluetooth headphones (which are almost 3 years old but still work/pair/sound as good as new). All while I’m running the Simple Last.fm Scrobbler application (linked up top) for Android to scrobble the music info from my phone to my last.fm account. Gyyeah, I’m geeking out rather nicely right now on account that it’s all working smoovely. Isn’t technology some kind of wonderful?
