WrestleMania 24 mini-review

Watching RAW right now (the Jericho/Punk match was terrific), I think it’s time to give some quick thoughts on last night’s season finale of the unending wrestling season:

-The Money In The Bank match was rather innovative (which is a difficult task to accomplish each year). In particular, suicide spots by Morrison and Shelton stood out (the Y2J/Carlito/CM Punk ladder spot was also rather original). Great to see Punk snatch the case as this hopefully will lead to a significant push in which the WWE fans get to see the kinds of things he’s famous for from his ROH days.

-The massive pyro/fireworks budget must have literally burned a hole in Vince’s pocket.

-The Flair career threatening match saw HBK (who I’ve never particularly cared for) take one of the sickest bumps I’ve ever seen anyone take (an Asai moonsault onto the announcer’s table with a bad landing). I was convinced he broke some ribs or something. Props to him finishing the match and thankfully retiring Flair (kayfabe?) with the emotional “Old Yeller” finish.

-Edge (who was also undefeated at WM) should have gone over Taker in the main event to retain the World title and break Taker’s undefeated WM streak as his character is stronger than its ever been. I guess they wanted the dead man to close to show doing his dead poses (is he EVER going to lose at Mania?).

-“Snoopy The Dogg” (as described by Santino who is always gold on the mic) was a good BunnyMania MC and had some good comedic timing in the backstage skit.

-The Triple Threat for the WWE title saw a swerve ending with Orton retaining the title against the “nepotized” politicker Triple H and the annoyingly superhuman John Cena in a good surprise finish (kick to the head). I don’t mind that.

-The Show/Mayweather celebrity bout was structured to hide Floyd’s inability to work and was more entertaining than I thought it would be with Floyd getting roughed up a bit (he collected 2.5 million for this match, so it’s the least he could have done) as well as his posse getting a beat down from Show. The “greatest fighter in the world” went over with the brass-knucks knock out punch to the “largest athlete in the world” (even in kayfabe, that’s a bit hard to believe).

I personally give the show a 7.1 on 10 and it’s the best Mania since XIX. Would have been worth getting the HD broadcast (that is if you split the high price with 3 other friends). Otherwise, search the internettings.

Time to say goodbye to The Nature Boy on RAW…

Update: Fan footage of what occurred when RAW went off the air after the unbelievably emotional televised farewell ceremony.

BlogThings #44: Bringing sexy back? It never even left!

You Are Very Sexy Damn! You are one hot number. You have a lot of sex appeal. You know you’re sexy, and you’re not afraid to put it all out there.

And while you’re very appealing, you’re careful not to be trashy or over the top. Sexy is all about attitude. And you totally have the attitude that people love.

How You Are Sexy

You are open to all sorts of experiences, and you have a taste for the exotic. Your adventurous spirit is very sexy.

Your modern look is sexy. You don’t give people too much of the same old thing. You like to change it up.

You wear sexy underwear, and that’s definitely hot. Feeling sexy is important to being sexy, even if no one knows what’s underneath your clothes.

You keep your body fit and healthy, and that’s hot. Plus, sweating is also sexy! Are You Sexy?

How did your Earth Hour go?

It’s actually more like Earth Hour and a half (or two) over here (just turned on some music not long ago, but the candles are still lit). Spent the majority of the actual hour learning a new magic routine from my Five Times Five Japan magic book entitled “Ambitious Clip” by the Japanese illusionist Tomo Maeda (to those of you who are actually familiar with the Ambitious Card routine, Ambitious Clip is an ingenious way of adding a 2 phase kicker to your ACR using a paperclip). I kinda dig doing things by candlelight, plus we got these “mmmmassif” candles from my sister’s wedding from 5 years ago that just don’t seem to be getting any smaller. Fact: Drinking beer makes the hour go by like that *snap*.

Last.fm CSS Color Changer → last.fm

This is quite refreshing for those of us scrobblers that are tired of the red or the black layouts. And for the record, I’m currently rocking the beige and blue layout (although it’s only visible to me on my Stylish enabled browser). Optional layout colour schemes visible to the public would be a nice option, Last.fm staff.

16. Jay Dee - Give It Up (Welcome 2 Detroit, 2001)

From Dilla’s first solo album and what would ultimately become his only contribution to the famed and fantastic BBE Beat Generation series (which also includes the works of Pete Rock and DJ Jazzy Jeff). This is one of those tracks that gets you hyped, not only because of the hook (“all my live bitcheehhzzz!!!”), but sonically as well; there is so much going on that, with the right speaker and sub setup, you can feel and even see (with your eyes closed) the multiple elements that Dilla (then known as Jay Dee) laid out for this composition (i.e. the keys, the horns, the whistle(?!), the hollow drums, the trademark vocal chops in the intro, etc.). And on top (or the bottom) of everything, this beat bumps something fierce and nasty with a deliberately prolonged vibe, further cementing Dilla’s position as a “drum god” (as Kanye once put it). Welcome 2 Detroit is currently out of print, although I got lucky a couple of years ago and snatched a copy off Amazon when they had 5 available. Track a copy down however which way you can to experience the true sounds of the Dee.

You Are Sneakers

You are creative, funky, and forward thinking.
You are cool, but you are still approachable.

You are stylish and edgy, but you aren’t a slave to fashion.
You tend to put your own spin on trends.

You tend to have a fast paced, busy lifestyle.
Not a lot of people can keep up with you!

You should live: Near nature
You should work: In a job that keeps you on the go

“We told you a few weeks ago that “Birthday Girl” could easily get dropped off of Rising Down. We received word over the weekend that the song is now the International Single and will be an iTunes exclusive. It will not appear on the North American release.” —From the OkayPlayer front page. This is an excellent decision as I didn’t see this song fitting well at all with the rest of Rising Down (from what I’ve heard so far with the leaked singles). I for one am looking forward to a Game Theory level of cohesiveness for the new album, and that wouldn’t have been possible if Birthday Girl were to be included (as the final track at that). And since the song’s intended purpose was to usher in some new fans from the teenage Top 40 crowd (i.e. Fallout Boy’s audience) and bump up sales (totally all for that), then putting it as an iTunes exclusive single will help to do just that. After all, kids these days don’t buy CDs anymore (because they gotta drive to the store, pay the dollars to the clerk, drive back, rip off the plastic and pop the disc into their computer so they can rip it…life’s tough).

Arthur Clarke's 2001 Diary → visual-memory.co.uk

An interesting and often hilarious look into the thought processes of Stanley Kubrick and Sir Arthur C. Clarke during the 4 years(!) that 2001: A Space Odyssey was in production. Oh to be a fly on the wall during those epic multiple hour convos between these two intellectual giants.

From the always fascinating Kubrick Site; I could read those articles all day (and have!). For instance, here’s what I feel is the most amazing essay written about Eyes Wide Shut:
